More about the trackpad/touchpad

The touchpad on Windows 10-based laptops can often stop working for no apparent reason – sometimes the scrolling or multitouch gesture features stop working, or the touchpad might not even work at all. Furthermore, issues can arise with software or out-of-date drivers are conflicting with the touchpad itself, as a result, this can trigger problems with your touchpad. Faulty hardware is reserved for the last resort because most touchpads are built to last for the entire lifespan of the laptop which is more than 10 years.

When the touchpad stops working is worthwhile to check if removing all other hardware types might fix the issue – unplug your external mouse, and any other USB devices or pointing devices, then restart the PC to see if the problem is resolved.

How to fix laptop touchpad not working

Touchpad problems come from the hardware or drivers that conflict and stop the device from working. Tracking down the problem isn’t an easy task, which is why we recommend uninstalling the device driver and reinstalling it firstly. Other possible methods of fixing the issues are listed:

  1. Confirm that the touchpad is connected and showing in Device Manager.
  2. Use the shortcut key on the keyboard to enable/disable the touchpad – Sometimes the user is unaware that there is a keyboard button, or combination, that can enable or disable the touchpad in Windows 10. Check one of the F keys (F1, F2, etc..) to see if you can see something that resembles a touchpad, and press it in combination with the Fn button to get your device working again.
  3. Check the settings of the touchpad’s management software – In case of a Synaptics Point Device, use the Synaptics Manager to check that your touchpad settings are configured correctly.
  4. Use Windows Update to solve hardware and software errors.
  5. Run the Windows Troubleshooter to fix hardware and software problems.
  6. Manually download and install the correct drivers and software to get the touchpad working correctly.
  7. Enable the ETD service – Go to Services and enable ETD service.
  8. Check your BIOS touchpad settings – Locate the Internal Pointing Device and enable it.

We hope this has helped you fix the problem with your touchpad not working.
